A stout-hearted basketball player, Mike McGee was a star in college for the Michigan men's basketball team and then was drafted by the Los Angels Lakers. As a rookie in 1981-82 he scored 4.9 points per game while playing in 9.0 minutes per/game in 39 games. By 1983-84 he was the Lakers starter in 45 of the 77 regular season games.
A fans favorite and a highly rated team player, MIke McGee had the good fortune to play on two NBA Champions with the Lakers, 1981-82 and 1984-85 and two runner-ups. In his first season Mike McGee played on the LA Lakers NBA Championship team featuring Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbas, Norm Nixon and others. In 1982-83 the Lakers played and lost in the Championship to Philadelphia and in 1983-84 played and lost to Boston in the Final, in 1984-85 Los Angels defeated Boston in the Championship. Later in his NBA career Mike McGee went to the playoffs with Atlanta and also with Phoenix.
